Rodney Smith aka Roots Manuva was the prince of UK hip-hop and he sauntered onto the stage like crowned royalty. He played some of his new stuff but also included Witness which whipped the crowd into a frenzy but from the pit things looked different.
In between set’s I saw him check his phone and I wished that I had seen him play when he had first broke, when his routine wasn’t so automated and his songs hadn’t been surpassed by hungry usurpers.
Twas still a highlight of the day because Witness and Dreamy Days were part of the soundtrack to my teen dream years, but a little more effort next time wouldnt hurt Rodney.
